Poor writing apparently rules.

Years ago, when I wrote poorly and had Mary Sues and self-inserts and whatnot, people loved my work and I rarely got flamed. Nowadays, I write realistically and stay far away from OCs if the situation doesn't call for it, I study up on the canon characters and I write fluidly and in ways that I know people would like.

So, is it just summer vacation, or is everyone just avoiding my stories?

And it's just curiosity. I am writing a Halo fic that is guaranteed to have twists no one saw coming, but I won't finish it if no one is going to read it (and by read, all writers appreciate reviews). I recently entered the FFVII fandom, too, and I wrote and published only when I felt comfortable enough to do it.

So, I reiterate:

Twenty-eight chapters gained 117 reviews for my Mary Sue self-insert fic, "Jak: Revelations". Nineteen chapters gained forty-three reviews for my Tomb Raider fic, "The Ruby Star". So, what gives? The same thing happens with my artwork, too: fanart gets some views, and my original space art earns... none.

Needless to say, I am not a content writer/artist right now. Any feedback to my questions would by much appreciated.

I seriously have to upload the artwork I've been doing lately, too.

My newest fics are listed below. Find them at FanFiction.Net/~humanbeldot. All except "Reverence Fall" are one-shots and don't take too long to read:
Afar - FFVII:AC, Kadifa (Kadaj/Tifa) and Breathing - FFVII:AC, Kadifa

Relic - Halo 3, slight AU, featuring Cortana discovering that John's luck has finally run out. Angst/drama.

Chocobo - FFVII:AC, featuring Yazoo finding a materia that allows him to turn Kadaj into a chocobo. Humor.

Halo: Reverence Fall - Halo 2 AU, sequel only if desired.

I'm running into the same problem with my artwork. I established myself as a "fan artist" when I first came here, and now I'm having a hard time establishing myself as "not just another fan artist."

My Ratchet and Clank fan art that I recently posted got a ton of views and faves. It wasn't even a completed piece (hardly good enough to be in my gallery in the first place) and I did it almost a year ago. Then, that same day, I post some original work, and I barely get any views or comments, and this was a finished piece!

All my fans seemed to have watched me for the fan art, and now I feel like I need to find a new audience somehow.

I know. I work so hard on my space art and my newest fics, and they go completely ignored. Is there any way to erase that reputation, I wonder. :(

I'm trying to go back to basics of how I started here in the first place. We just need to dive into another community by commenting, faving, and watching artists that have similar interests and works. That's how we did it as fan artists. I don't think it's a matter of changing our audience, just finding a new one that'll appreciate the work you do now. Same goes for your written works.

I see what you mean. I found a whole forum on FF.net dedicated to helping people that don't get much recognition, plus I am considering asking ^taenaron or ^gucken to possibly feature me in their sci-fi art of the month. Wow, that was a long sentence. Haha

People seem to like simple fics to ones that have taken a great amount of hard work, I noticed. But I think that if you enjoy writing those stories, then it shouldn't matter if no one else likes them. It doesn't mean you're a bad writer. I must have read your Jak II: Renegade Alpha fic over a dozen times, and I thoroughly enjoy it.

As for your space art, I think it's fabulous. I can comment on them if you like, and read through your Halo fic and review each chapter. :)

I just think it's more important to have fewer reviews that matter then a load of them sucking-up.

Yeah, I can see where you're coming from. Just when nobody reviews or anything, it keeps me from writing anything further because I believe... well, nobody's reading any of it. I have two favs for "Relic", a Halo oneshot set during Halo 3 and slightly AU, but no reviews. I also noticed that people tend to shy away from fics with a low chapter-to-review ratio. I know I sometimes do.

And I would appreciate it if you read the Halo fic. I worked real hard, researched everything, and I have a real twist two chapters from now that I can't wait to unveil. I'd like to be able to finish this monster (28 chapters. Oh my).

And believe me, I hate the suck-up, "this is gr8t rite more soon!" reviews. Have they no creativity?

It can be very off-putting sometimes.

I'm currently reading your Halo fic. I've just finished chapter one, so I'm off to review it now. 28 chapters? Holy shizzstick! :wow: Well, I can only give you good luck in getting them all done.

Yeah, text speak reviews can really take the what-name.

Aww, thank you so much for reading it. Of course, you know you didn't have to, but I really do appreciate it! :D And yup, 28 chapters. This should be a lot of fun...
